Dean
Huston ~
first played Sousaphone as a
Freshman in the
Harrisburg High School Band
in 1950, and Played through 1954. In
1954 I was picked as one of the 14
Sousaphone players in the All
Northwest Music Educators Conference
Band which met in
Bellingham Washington.
It was 28
years later that I told the
Junction City High School band
director I had played in school and he
convinced me to help with the bass parts
in his school band. There was no other
low brass at that time! He also started
a polka band to play at the Scandinavian
Festival in which I played the tuba.
This polka band is still in existence
and I have been the coordinator-director
for many years.
The next
band director in
Junction City started a Brass
Quintet and needed a Trombone
part. There being no trombone
players, He gave me a Euphonium and
I played for about 10 years with this
group.
I played
with the Eugene Community Orchestra two
times, about 20 years ago for a couple
of seasons then about the past 3 years.
Retiring last year. And, with the
Springfield Community band several years
ago.
I played
with the
Oregon Tuba Association Tuba
Carol Concert at Christmas time a few
times during those years, finally
joining the Association and Ensemble
I started
at 2nd Euphonium, then switched to 3rd
tuba part, occasionally filling in at
2nd or 1st when needed.
I have been
President of the
Oregon Tuba Association for 2
years.
I am
greatly pleased at the progress the
Oregon Tuba Ensemble has made
under the direction of Andy Schanz.

Joined Army, got married, started a family

Central PA, Two professional German Bands,
Brass 5tet, Tuba Euph 4tet, Professional 11

a time. |
